At approximately 2:45 pm on March 10, a green 2002 Subaru Outback was driving eastbound toward South Fork near mile marker 168.5 over Wolf Creek Pass. The vehicle rounded a right-hand curve into a snow shed and skidded into the westbound lanes where it struck a white 2017 Ford F150.
There were three occupants in the Subaru and three in the Ford, all from the Denver area. Five people suffered severe injuries and were transported to Rio Grande Hospital. The rear seat passenger in the Subaru, Antonino Ortiz, 24 of Northglenn died at the scene. The Subaru driver, identified as, 22-year-old Gena Franqui, of Westminster, and front seat passenger, Bethani Larson, 21, of Thornton, both sustained serious injuries.
The driver of the Ford was identified as 45-year-old Mariano Hernandez Morales of Denver and his passengers were Gustavo Morales, 50, and one juvenile. The driver and passenger in the Ford were seriously injured as well. Police continue to investigate the cause of the accident but suspect drugs, alcohol, and excessive speed as factors in the crash.
