Colorado Springs (January 18, 2019) – A driver in El Paso County died in a crash Friday evening around the time the day’s snowstorm was beginning to wind down. The accident took place on Briargate, near Union Boulevard just before 8:30 pm. The accident involved a series of three collisions. A truck hit a light pole, crashed into a car, and then slammed into a building.
Colorado Springs Police say the truck was going northbound in the southbound lanes of Briargate before the pinball-like collision. The driver first stuck and toppled a light pole. He then turned around and headed south on Briargate, this time in the right direction and correct lanes. The truck then collided with a Honda traveling north on Union. The driver of the Honda was not injured. After this collision, the truck continued on and finally hit a building on the north side of Briargate. The driver died in this 3rd and final collision, his name has not yet been released.
Officers are still working out the details of this unusual crash. Police have not determined which factors contributed to the crash, but are looking into road conditions, speed, alcohol, and drugs. The roads were icy and snow-packed when the crash happened.
Clean up and investigation closed the intersection for four and a half hours Friday evening. This is the fourth traffic fatality of the year in Colorado Springs.
