Colorado Springs (February 15, 2019) – On Wednesday night, Colorado State Patrol responded to a fatal crash on 1-25 near the Mesa Ridge Parkway exit, near Fountain. Police closed all lanes of 1-25 south of Colorado Springs in both directions for several hours overnight for cleanup and investigation.
The crash involved three cars, and one driver, 33-year-old Lucas Huffman of Colorado Springs, was fatally injured. Huffman was driving south on the interstate when a 2014 Volkswagen Passat rear-ended his Honda CRV.
The Honda was then pushed across the median and into oncoming traffic, where it hit a sedan in the northbound lanes. Huffman was ejected from his vehicle and died at the scene.
CSP confirmed that all drivers involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts. The driver of the sedan suffered only minor injuries. Information about the condition of the driver of the Volkswagen was not released. Troopers are investigating the accident and said charges are pending, but they do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
All lanes of 1-25 reopened just before 11 pm.
