Why Do I Need a Copy of My Accident Report?

A traffic accident report is a report filed by police containing facts about an accident. An accident report is typically comprised of the following information:

  • drivers and passengers involved in the accident
  • injuries sustained in the accident
  • vehicle damage and other property damage
  • witness names and testimonies
  • the officer’s understanding of events leading to the accident
  • any other pertinent information the officer wants to include.

The accident report is considered to be the legal truth of the matter and influences decisions made by insurance companies, traffic and civil court judges, and attorneys. Sometimes an officer will make a factual or subjective error on the police report.

Depending on the circumstances of your case, it can be very difficult to have a traffic accident report amended, although an experienced auto accident attorney may be able to help. For this reason, it is very important to obtain a copy of the accident report and read it carefully to ensure accuracy.
